Athlone TY Students in F1 in Schools World Finals

A six-strong team of Transition Year students from Marist College Athlone are blazing a trail to Dubai next November to represent Ireland at the “F1 in Schools” World Finals. Their team Vintius (From the Celtic God of wind) Racing, were runners-up in the national finals, held earlier this month in TU Dublin and now have the exciting prospect of a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the United Arab Emirates to prepare for.

F1 in Schools is an international STEM challenge where teams of students aged 9 to 19 use CAD 3D modelling software to design miniature formula one cars. The cars are analysed, manufactured and rigorously tested with the gaol being to build the world’s fastest F1 in Schools car. Other features of the project include raising sponsorship money from local businesses to pay for your team expenses, writing portfolios and designing a website.

Vintius racing is made up of six TY students: Conor McNamara (Team Manager), Eoghan Carroll (Design Engineer), Alex Farrell (Manufacturing Engineer), Brian O’ Hara Duggan (Project Manager), Michael Munnelly (Graphic Designer and Callum McKnight (Marketing Manager).

The two engineers on the team, Eoghan and Alex are responsible for creating their lightning-quick car. This challenge requires a significant amount of research on advanced aerodynamics. The car was created using solidworks CAD software. Knowledge of this type of software can be very useful for subjects like DCG and technology. They also collaborated with the Athlone Institute of Technology who helped 3D print and mill the fully-designed car.

The team would also like to thank some of their main sponsors:

  • Advanced NDT Solutions: an advanced non-destructive testing service company with years of experience in multiple fields such as pharmaceutical chemistry.
  • Newell Roofing Products: A Galway-based manufacturer and distributor of commercial, industrial and agricultural roofing products.
  • Patrick McKnight Roofing: An established Athlone based Roofing contractor. Who specialise in copper, zinc and silicone membrane flat roofs.
